Crafts at Ardtarmon |
We are engaged in a number of crafts at Ardtarmon in which visitors are welcome to participate in the different seasons. There is our small scale cattle management including milking and the periodic making of butter, cheese, yoghurt etc. The pigs include a sow and one litter a year, all kept outdoors where ground is cultivated in rotation and the animals are contained by electric fencing. At the appropriate times, curing and smoking of the meats is carried out. There is also a flock of poultry for eggs and the table, kept in natural outdoor conditions. The animal enterprises are kept for home consumption principally. Fruit and vegetables are also grown for home use including blackcurrants, gooseberries, apples etc. In our coastal location shelter is an important consideration and many small plantations of salt tolerant tree varieties of all ages have been planted giving interest to visitors. A certain amount of wood working is also available to see. A weather station linked to the meteorological service has been located here for sixteen years with rainfall and temperature records. We usually have temporary people to assist us and those interested
in any of the above are welcome to
